3 Minutes, 2,000 Years

In every generation, each person must look on herself / himself as if she or he was in Israel during its establishment. This movie provides a look at events leading up to the establishment of the Jewish State.

As we celebrate 59 years of the establishment of Israel, the Jewish homeland, we should remind ourselves the place of Israel in our lives as Jews. Just a few weeks ago, around the seder table, we reminded our selves that as Jews we must remember what it is like to win freedom after years of oppression. We are commended to this memory year after year. As modern Jews we should try and remind ourselves year after year the purpose of Israel in our Jewish life, and the place of Israel in this world.

Here are some guiding questions, or rather points to think about and discuss with friends or family when celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day:

  1. What is the role Israel plays in my life as a North-American Jew?
  2. What is the role Israel should play in the world?
  3. How does the Israel’s existence affect me as a Jew?
  4. Try to imagine your thoughts and feelings, if you were there the day the state of Israel was established.
